Fazil Kutchuk


Fazil Kutchuk was a Turkish Cypriot, born in Nicosia in 1906. He studied medicine abroad and returned in 1937 to become involved in politics and journalism. He founded a newspaper, ‘Halkin Sesi’, to promote Turkish Cypriot rights and campaign against the British administration. He also founded KATAK, a political organisation to help Turkish Cypriots. He represented them at the 1959 Conferences for the creation of an independent Cyprus. After independence in August 1960, Makarios became President and he was appointed Vice President, until 1973 when he was succeeded by Rauf Denktas. He died on 15 January 1984.
