East Gate, Nicosia

The East Gate is now called the Famagusta Gate, and is still recognisable from this print of 1878 that was published in the Illustrated London News. It is part of the defensive wall around the old city built by the Venetians in the 16th century. Indian troops can be seen in this picture and the British flag flies above the gate. A cavalryman waters his horse from a trough that has water pouring from a spout halfway up the wall.
