Larnaca 23 July 1878

In the foreground, a landing craft carries horses for the Indian Cavalry, either the 9th Bengal Cavalry or the 1st Bombay Cavalry. It is towed by a small naval tug. The transport ship on the left unloads horses onto a pier. In the right corner British officers are rowed in by Indian servants. The shore is lined with houses and minarets, with mountains forming a backdrop. They look as if they are closer to the coast than they actually are. The highest peak is supposed to be Stavrovouni, 700 metres high, which has a monastery at the summit. This mountain is nearly 20 kilometres from Larnaca, but is clearly visible from the coast further west of Larnaca.
