The Cyprus Polka


A song sheet for music composed by Charles D’Albert to celebrate the British takeover of Cyprus in 1878. Sir Garnet Wolseley’s portrait has a central position at the top of the page and Indian troops parade after landing at Larnaca. In the foreground is a mounted officer of the 9th Bengal Cavalry whose uniform is incorrect. The 1st Bombay Lancers form ranks advancing behind him. On the right is a sepoy of the 13th Bengal Native Infantry wearing the correct uniform. In the background ships are anchored offshore and soldiers have been brought to the beach. The Union Flag flies over the old Ottoman fort of Larnaca. The lithographer was M & N Hanhart Chromo Lith.
