Chanak Crisis

These images show British forces in Chanak in 1922 in expectation of defending the Neutral Zone agreed at the Treaty of Sevres and the Straits of Dardanelles themselves from Nationalist Turks advancing Northwards after they had successfully repelled the Greeks from the Smyrna (Izmir) and environs. Lloyd George was prepared to use force to defend the Treaty of Sevres but discovered that too few Allies or even his fellow MPs were willing to risk another war so soon after the First World War and over an obscure place that few people back in Britain could even find on a map.
