Timothy Toyne Sewell, known as Big Tim, was born on 7 Jul 1941 and educated at Bedford School. After Sandhurst he was commissioned into the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in 1961. He served in Hong Kong and Aden. He was Commanding Officer of the KOSB in August 1981 until November 1983 during which time the Battalion was stationed at Osnabrück.
He was appointed Chief of Staff for the British Forces in the Falkland Islands in 1983. He commanded 19th Infantry Brigade in 1985 and was then in command of the British Military Advisory and Training Team in Zimbabwe and Mozambique in 1989. His last military posting was as Commandant of RMA Sandhurst from 1991 to 1994. He retired in 1994 and was appointed Colonel of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in 1995, until 2001. He was Director of Goodenough College from 1994 to 2006, and chairman of United World Colleges. He was married in 1965 and they had one son, Patrick, and a daughter Melanie.
