The star-pattern shako plate was discontinued in 1869 and replaced by a new universal form consisting of a gilt laurel wreath, Victorian crown and Royal Garter. At the centre was a symbolic representation of Edinburgh Castle with the Roman numerals XXV in silver, and beneath it the Edinburgh motto Nisi Dominus Frustra on a silver scroll.
Most regiments were required to display their number in the centre, cut out of the gilt metal in stencil form as with the previous pattern. The 25th Regiment, however, was permitted to retain a distinctive badge granted to them in 1832, giving their plate a more individual character. The plate measures 3 inches in width and 3.25 inches in depth.
