The date of this illustration is not known but the style of the artwork is 1930s. The pattern of the mess jacket follows the description in the 1911 Dress Regulations for Officers apart from the absence of gold braid on the cuffs. A page from the 1911 Dress Regulations is shown below to compare with the two other Lowland regiments; the Royal Scots and the Royal Scots Fusiliers. The blue gauntlet-style cuffs have gilt buttons but not gold braid button-hole loops. The style of jacket is called rolled collar, authorised for all infantry regiments of the line. The rank of lieutenant is denoted by gilt stars on the blue shoulder straps. The trousers and waistcoat are in the Leslie tartan.
