The uniform worn by the KOSB at the beginning of World War One is demonstrated in this group photo taken in Dublin in 1914. The glengarry cap was worn instead of the more widely adopted khaki service cap. This was replaced by the khaki Tam-o-Shanter in 1915, and steel helmets were issued in 1916. The khaki serge service dress was buttoned with the universal pattern ‘Royal Arms’ brass buttons, and the shoulder straps had brass KOSB titles.
The previous leather equipment was replaced in 1908 by webbing belts and pouches. The waist-belt is 3 inches wide. There are five pouches on each side, each one holding 15 rounds of .303 ammunition in three clips. At the back would be a frog for the 17-inch bladed bayonet for the Mk III SMLE rifle. In field dress order a trenching tool, haversack, and water-bottle were carried.
The lieutenant seated in the centre wears the revised khaki service dress tunic which has lapels and shows a khaki shirt and tie. Bronze regimental badges are worn on each lapel. He has Leslie tartan trousers and a glengarry cap. The section has two .303 Maxim guns and a range-finder on display.
