The sergeant is in dress uniform but with a glengarry cap instead of his white foreign service helmet. He holds a cane which indicates that he is in walking out order. The scarlet dress doublet is edged in white and has white button‑hole loops on the Inverness skirts and cuffs. The cuffs and collar are blue, the collar having the first pattern regimental brass badges. His white leather waist‑belt has a bayonet in a frog on his left hip. He has a crimson sergeant’s sash on his right shoulder, and the scarlet shoulder straps have embroidered white regimental titles.
The trews are in government tartan and his (rather small) glengarry is blue with a diced band of red, white and green. The medals are the Egypt medal with blue and white striped ribband, and the Khedive’s Star with a plain blue ribband. These were for service in Egypt and Sudan from 1888 to 1890. The photo was taken either in Egypt or India. The 2nd Battalion sailed from Egypt and were stationed at Umballa in 1891.
