A series of coloured drawings of five individual soldiers of the 25th Regiment stationed on Minorca in the 1770s include this study of a private from the grenadier company on sentry duty in cold weather. There is little of his uniform showing beneath the blanket, but his shoulder belts can be seen, one with a brass match-case attached, and the other having a buckle. He seems to have a dress coat with regimental lace on the facings. The black fur grenadier cap is plain apart from two white tassels hanging down from the top.
The blanket is described as greyish with a pattern of darker grey cross stripes and an edging of two broad green stripes. It is tied at the neck with black ribbons. The monochrome reproduction was published in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research vol XVIII no.71 (Autumn 1939) with an article by Percy Sumner. But the illustration cuts off the original caption (in English) written by the artist, probably Guiseppe Chiesa, ‘Grenadier XXV Regiment Sentry in Cold Weather’.
One of the panoramic paintings probably by the same artist was painted a few years earlier soon after the 25th arrived on Minorca, when the grenadiers wore the previous pattern fur cap. This can be seen at Grenadier Sentry & Sergeant Major 1769 .
