This very clear photo of a Signaller Sergeant of the East Surreys shows the scarlet dress tunic worn with the undress glengarry cap. The regimental badges are worn on the left side of the cap and on each side of the collar. The collar badges are the arms of Guildford without the star and crown. The glengarry badge is the same as the centre of the helmet badge. The glengarry was replaced in English regiments in the mid 1890s for the field service cap. He has gold lace sergeants stripes on his right arm only, and an embroidered badge of crossed flags to show that he commands a signals section. The style of tunic with ‘jam pot’ cuffs was worn throughout the 1880s and 90s. The shoulder straps have a curved brass title. The white leather waist-belt is fastened with a circular interlocking brass centre that bore the universal royal crest. He has his sergeant’s red sash on his right shoulder, ending in tassels behind his left hip.
