Private Alfred Ablett VC

Ablett was in a trench at the siege of Sevastopol on 2nd Sept 1855 when a burning shell fell in. There were two cases of ammunition which could have exploded so he seized the shell and threw it over the parapet where it exploded without hurting anyone. He was born on 3rd Aug 1830 in Weybread, Suffolk, where he also died on 12th March 1897. He reached the rank of sergeant. After leaving the Grenadier Guards he joined the police and became an Inspector at Millwall Docks.
