It is not clear when this style was adopted, but in the decade leading up to 1820, when sabretaches were brought in for the heavy cavalry, the shape that later became more associated with light cavalry was used by the Dragoon Guards. The 4th DG were a silver laced regiment at the time and the herringbone pattern lace here matches the pouchbelt lace (see Pouchbelts). The royal cypher was never used by the 4th, only the star of St Patrick authorised to be used by the regiment in 1783. The scroll below the crown bears the battle honour PENINSULA.
