Charles More Stockley was born in Perth, Western Australia, on 19 May 1845. His father was William Stanhope Stockley and his mother was Sarah Pearson. He entered the 101st (Royal Bengal Fusiliers) as an ensign on 4 Jan 1862. He served in the Northwest Frontier in 1863 and took part in the attack on the Crag Piquet. He was severely wounded on the Umbeyla Heights on 19 Nov. He was in the Jowaki campaign of 1877-78 as Brigade Major in the 1st Infantry Brigade. He served throughout the 2nd Afghan War of 1878-80, first as Brigade Major in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division Southern Afghanistan Field Force, and afterwards with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment in north Afghanistan. He was with the battalion at Shekabad under Major General Ross, mentioned in despatches and awarded a brevet of major.
He was the 2nd Lieutenant-Colonel, 1st Battalion in August 1890 and commanded the 1st Battalion from 21 July 1888, up until August 1890. After retiring from the regiment he was given command of the Omagh Regimental District.
Captain Charles Stockley was married on 19 Jan 1874 to Margaret Sandes, in Tralee, Co.Kerry. They had at least 2 sons, William and James and one daughter, Lucy. They lived in Lewisham, Kent in 1851, and in Cold Ash, Berkshire in 1911. Colonel Stockley died on 18 October 1923 and was buried in St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Greenham, Berkshire.
