George Harrington Hawes was born in Jubbulpore, West Bengal, on 4 April 1826 and commissioned into the 9th East Norfolk Regiment on 24 Nov 1843. He went to the Sutlej with the regiment to fight in the First Sikh War at Moodki, Ferozeshah and Sobraon. On 13 April 1853 Captain Hawes married Cecilia Priscilla Yelverton, daughter of the 3rd Viscount Avonmore, but she died on 18 September 1854.
Captain Hawes was also in the Crimea from 27 Nov 1854 and took part in the assault on the batteries on 18 June 1855. He was rewarded with a brevet of major on 2 Nov 1855 and the Order of the Medjidie 5th Class. He commanded the 1st Battalion of the 9th Regiment from May 1872 to July 1877. He was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria in 1872.
After relinquishing command he was promoted to honorary major-general. He was an accomplished cricketer. The London Gazette of 30 June 1905 had Hon.Major-General Hawes listed under Jubilee of the Crimean War: To be Ordinary Members of the Military Division of the Third Class, or Companions of the Orders of Knighthood. Major-General Hawes died in Colchester on 21 March 1911. The photo shows him in civilian clothes c1853.
