This example of a bandsman’s tunic of the Norfolk Regiment is basically the pattern adopted in 1902 which replaced the round cuffs with pointed cuffs. The other change in 1902 was the return to the 1857 style of slashed, buttoned flaps on the back skirts. From 1868 to 1902 the skirts had simply had two straight white lines of piping on the back plaits.
In 1905 the Norfolks were permitted to revert back to the yellow facings that were worn before they were ordered to change to white in 1881. The shoulder straps were scarlet, edged white, until c1907 when they were changed to yellow. The scarlet shoulder wings were detachable and, for the band, were edged and diagonally striped with plain white lace. High ranking NCOs such as staff sergeants had gold lace. This specimen is missing the collar badges and brass shoulder titles. The buttons differ from the drummers’ in that they are regimental with the figure of Britannia.
