This detail is part of the sash shown in Drum-Major & Drummer 1864. The amount of work put into the embroidery is prodigious. Queen Victoria’s crown is the uppermost part of the design that can be seen, another photo shows that PENINSULA is on a scroll above. Below the crown is an unusual shaped foliated scroll which has the feint lettering CORUNNA visible where the stitching has been removed. The letter B is to the right, the beginning of BUSACO. To the left of Corunna is a barely visible ROLEIA the former spelling of Rolica, before it was changed in 1911.
The figure of Britannia with lion is on a red background surrounded by a strap with honours for the Peninsula War. From the left: VITTORIA, SALAMANCA, ST SEBASTIAN, VIMIERA. The lower part, beneath Britannia has NIVE. The scrolls below that are FEROZESHAH and MOODKEE. A three part scroll further down is inscribed CABOOL 42, IX REGT and SOBRAON. Below that is a double scroll; SEVASTOPOL and KABUL ’79. The last scroll, just above the drumsticks, has AFGHANISTAN but without 1879-80. The lettering on the Kabul and Afghanistan honours is more spaced and looks as if they have been added to the sash that was in use in the 1860s.
