Little is known about this senior NCO apart from his rank and surname. He has no medals to show active service but as the photo was taken in the early 1850s, within a few years he would be in the Crimea. The pose and his uniform suggest that the photo was taken by David Octavius Hill around the same time as the series of six portraits displayed at Edinburgh Castle that can be seen in this section. Like Colour Sergeant Leighton, he was in a battalion company and has rank and regimental badges on his glengarry cap. This photo shows part of his kilt and sporran. The grey goat-hair has five black tassels and the cantle is smooth brass with a central wreath and LXXIX. There is a glimpse of his bayonet suspended from a white leather waist belt. The view of his left sleeve shows the red slash flap laid over the green round cuff. The rank stripes are in silver lace.
