The caption to this photo tells us that he was called Daft Davie because he was absent-minded. It seems odd that an absent-minded soldier could reach the exalted rank of Colour Sergeant. The details of his uniform are discussed in relation to Colour Sergeant Taylor with the difference that Leighton was in a battalion company. The regimental and rank badges on his glengarry cap do not have either a stringed bugle or a flaming grenade. The bayonet suspended from his waist-belt is visible in this photo.
