Waist-Belt Clasp c1840

This clasp, from a Bosley auction catalogue is stated to be a 79th (QO Cameron Highlanders) pre 1855 Officer’s waist belt clasp. There is nothing to indicate the regiment but pictures of officers of the regiment show them wearing a similar pattern. The Spooner print of 1833 shows this clasp, although coloured all gold in the print, just showing beneath the officer’s jacket. The belt is black leather and supports the dirk. However, the clasp was still used after 1855. A photo of officers in India in 1864, wearing dress uniform, shows no visible waist-belt worn over the doublet, but the dirk is attached to a belt worn under the doublet and clasps similar to this can be seen on at least two of the officers.
