British Empire Title

4th Bengal Light Cavalry

Durbar in Lucknow, 1847

A water-colour by a local artist, of a Durbar where Lord Hardinge, Governor-General of India, met and embraced Wajid Ali Shah, King of Oudh, at Lucknow in November 1847. The figures in the lower right foreground are men of the Bengal Light Cavalry carrying Standards that were presented by the British to the King’s regiments. Three of the BLC men are wearing the usual French grey dress uniform while the fourth, on the right, wears lancer uniform, a rare image of the 4th BLC (Lancers). He is probably an Indian officer.
