This painting by Thomas Flowerday Clarke is titled ‘The Second Ride of Lance Dafadar (later Jemadar) Gobind Singh (d.1942), VC, 28th Light Cavalry Attached to 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) at Peizeires, 1 December 1917 (copy after Soper)’. The poor horse was doomed to be literally cut in two by an explosion soon after he left the trench. The figures in the trench are quite lifeless even though the whole scene is a copy of a much better etching by George Soper, reproduced in the Cavalry Journal no.70, October 1928. Two of the soldiers wear turbans (lungis) to remind us that the Sikhs were permitted to have them instead of helmets.
