Patrolling the Shires

As well as keeping watch for Jacobite insurrection, the dragoons were employed on the coast in Hampshire in 1725 to police the smuggling operations that kept the excise men on their toes. This painting by Orlando Norie shows the men of Churchill’s Dragoons in the uniforms and housings as depicted in the Cloathing Book of 1742, perhaps keeping a lookout for smugglers, or any other outlaws or rebels.
