Officer’s Shabraque Badge 1751

Regimental badges before 1751 were based on the arms of the Colonel, and this appeared on the regimental standard or guidon. The Cloathing Book of 1742 shows mounted dragoons with devices on their saddle-cloths that were of a universal pattern. There is less evidence of Troop officers’ saddle-cloths in the first half of the 18th century as most equestrian portraits are of senior officers. This illustration is conjectural, based only on the Morier painting of a mounted private of the 10th Dragoons. Officers would have had a similar pattern, more elaborately embroidered using metal wire. The Roman numeral for the number 10 over D is sewn onto a crimson silk background surrounded by a Union wreath of roses and thistles.
