Private 1763

The little known 1763 series of cavalry images includes this one of a private of the 10th Dragoons. There are subtle differences to the Morier painting of 1751. The regimental device sewn on to the rear part of the saddle-cloth is the blue garter with Georgian crown above and royal cypher in the red centre. The saddle-cloth has a pointed corner but retains the white and blue border. The front holster covers have the GR cypher but without the X D below. On the back of the saddle is a rolled cloak showing the yellow lining on the outside, and a black bag that may contain horse feed. The carbine is secured as in 1751, with the butt in a small leather bucket. His coat is very similar to the previous pattern but the cuff now has the laced button holes, (which look silver) in the shape of chevrons with buttons in the middle. The coat tails have become more formalised and the button and lace decoration clearly visible. The aiguillette on the right shoulder again, looks as if it is silver cord but it may be discoloured white paint on the image. We can see the yellow waistcoat with laced button-holes and silver metal buttons. The hat is less tricorned and appears to be evolving into the bicorn hat, and worn slightly skewed. The horses of dragoons all seem to be black and, since at least 1742, have a severely docked tail.
