Sir Charles Orr's Memoirs Volume 1

The Fort at Allahabad seen from the river

This Watercolour by Robert Smith shows The Fort at Allahabad seen from the river in 1814. By 1891 Allahabad was a far bigger and busier settlement and there would have been a lot more buildings and activity going on around it. The fort at Allahabad was built on the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers by Akbar, the third Emperor of the Mughal dynasty from 1583 onwards. This position was of strategic importance and was one of the focal points of the Uprising of 1857.
