Major Eustace Crawley had started his service with the 12th Lancers and had accompanied them to serve in the operations in Sierra Leone in 1897 winning the West Africa medal in the process. He served in the Boer War with his regiment notably in the relief of Kimberley and the battle of Diamond Hill. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to the Brevet rank of Major. After the war ended he was seconded to the Mounted Infantry of the West African Field Force.
He seems to have made a recover from the illness mentioned by Charles Orr and would be mobilised to serve with the 12th Lancers once more. Sadly he was killed early into the war on November 2nd 1914 being killed by a shell exploding nearby. There is a commemoration to him in the interesting church of Ayot St. Lawrence, in Hertfordshire. Unusually the church was built in a classical rather than a gothic style.
