This is a photograph of the Palace of the Sarkin (district head) of Bebeji, a strategic town just south of Kano, capital of the Kano Emirate. An example of traditional Hausa architecture from northern Nigeria. I have included it as the picture was taken in 1903 and so some of the people that Charles mentions in his account here in Volume 5 are probably sat at the entrance way.
The original caption reads: “King of Bibeji’s palace. An important town defending the Kano road from the south. Now quite off the trade route and of little importance.”
