Jim Herlihy has got the ball rolling with this letter:

Your Honour,

Addressing myself to your honour in the name of Jesus Christ who Your Honour so closely resembles, I apply for the post of Chief Clerk in your honourable establishment which I understand is vacant. My qualifications are supreme. I am thoroughly acquainted with all branches of tea production having for many years worked for the Honourable Mr. John Smithers, the Holy Father of Tea. Furthermore I am most skilful at manipulations of accounts and can arrange that in few years your Honour could retire to Honourable United Kingdom with comfortable pittance.

Prostrating myself at Your Honour’s Great Feet, I remain

Your humble Servant,

Lal Bannerjee]]>

Thu, 01 Nov 2012 08:30:05 +0000 unsuitablegirl 62@/vanilla/index.php?p=/discussions I am interested in the effect of our now diverse population on GB now.

Given that this is a country on the wane, I think that the immigrant population will be the saviours of GB. The energy they bring, have brought, over the decades, since the Windrush generation, the hard work, the corner shops generation, they have all become part of our island story.

I myself have married an East African Asian. We met in the sixties, and have been married for nearly fifty years now. Our children are young adults who are making their successful way in the world. We experienced racial prejudice from both sides, back in the sixties, seventies and eighties, and even into the nineties. Fortunately this is dying out, though it depends where you go in this country. Living in a largely monocultural village in the South East of England, we are tolerated but not accepted. Since we are not in any of the 'God clubs', we do not fit!
But at least there is toleration which is on the way to acceptance.
My wish is that both the immigrants who are here and have become British citizens, and the indigenous 'white ' people could be more open minded and accepting of difference.

I'm writing a novel called 'Unsuitable Girl' which deals with what happens when an Indian boy meets a Scottish girl in the sixties, and what happens when his family try to break them up. It's a story showing how far we have come as a country really.

But we still have a long way to go, both immigrant families and white British families, in changing attitudes from mutual suspicion to acceptance.
Anyone who'd be interested to have a look at my website it is:

I'd welcome constructive comments on my blog, ( http://preview.create.net/blog/) regarding the continuing effects of the end of empire which we are living day to day in this great country of ours.]]>

We know that after WW1 Britain was very short of money as debtor nations refused to pay back loans made by UK Goverment and that America was determinded to recoup the loans it made to the Uk, Personaly i think that if war did happen then Canada would have been over run without a doubt but Britain would have came out on top as the Royal Navy would have swept the seas of American vessels plus the UK would have made new overtones to the Japanese who would have prolly have leapt at the chance to sieze American colonies in the pacific.]]>

uk records say that african colonies where not to be considered for independence at least untill 1980 but we all know that, that was not what the usa wanted as they set about dismantling the sterling zone and with sterling devaluing gave the uk loans with the attached conditions that they could take over the afican markets.
now this is not america bashing its fact i like america but i love the uk a hell of a lot more, with british troops in africa that would cut down on civil wars and mass genocide mainly caused by tribalisem that the uk wanted to abolish as it new the trouble it could cause.
so lets think about this with our heads and not the liberal pc thoughts that many people have now adays, quite alot of africa should still be pink on the map benifits, peoples lifes would improve, cuts down on civil war + genocide, people would be educated, terrorism could be combated, less films of straving children and adults broadcasted on our tv screens by charities asking for money, and that is just a few ]]>

Why oh why has this country became a fifth rate power after all the money we spend on defence attached are the naval rates from the late 50,s to present day personnally i see it as a disgrace.

i am not Anti-American by any matter i worked with them in Afghan and i got on well with them and they are great people but i do beleive that the British Empire was a great thing yes it had it,s faults yes the UK done wrong things armister, and the concentration camps during the boar war but we were also a force for good and stability so in my mind the gd points of the Empire out layed it,s bad points.
America hated the Empire because the fought against it and claimed the were anti imperalist hmmmmm ok lets look at the phillipines they invaded that country ruled and kept bases there they also forced the panamaian goverment to accept huge American garrisons protecting the Canal much like the UK had in Egypt with Suez but we were put under pressure and forces to withdraw because the US wanted access to our markets ]]>

i'm in the process of coding battle-related information for the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971. i am trying to get approximates sizes (i.e., *number of combat troops*) in various units so that i might ball-park relative forces committed to battle. i'd like to identify figures for battalions, regiments/brigades/divisions, and so forth. i'm writing to this board, because i thought Indian and Pakistani units might resemble British units, and that your collective expertise would help me with these wars. i could be very wrong on this point. i am grateful to you for any information.

many thanks for your time,
