The map on the right shows Britain's holdings in West Africa - Nigeria, the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and, farther round to the north, Gambia - after the European scramble for colonies in the late I9th Century. Ignoring the threats of disease and death, white men had pressed inland, calling their respective governments after them till Liberia remained the only independent country in the area. |
