
Despite his considerable success as a governor in Hong Kong, his time in Cape Colony was regarded as less than illustrious. He stayed here less than six months, and apparently without reputation or distinction in the view of G. M. Theal, according to whom Pottinger left the colony 'without the esteem of a single colonist'
