Dutch and Danish Forts in Accra


The capture of Fort Sao Jorge from the Portuguese in 1637 represented a real turning point in European interest in Africa. The Portuguese pre-eminent position would never again recover its relative power and influence. The Dutch had replaced them as the regional power, for at least a while.
