Caton Woodville painted this illustration from a sketch by the famous war artist Melton Prior. In Louis Creswicke’s History of South Africa and the Transvaal War this is reproduced in Volume 6 with the caption “Burning the Farm of a Treacherous Burgher’. The Boer woman is shaking her fist at British soldiers from a mounted unit, in a rather half-hearted way compared with William Corner’s spirited description.
