Standards shown in the MS Book at Windsor castle, representing the first standards of the newly raised Queen's Regiment of Horse. The flags measured 22.5 ins x 22.5 ins. Three Standards shown (although only two of them here), all of silk damask and square. The Colonel’s — Yellow, fringe and tassels black and gold. In the centre, the Queen’s cypher MBER in gold, with crown above. Lieutenant-Colonel’s and Captain’s — Exactly the same.
James was married twice; his first wife Anne Hyde died in 1671. In 1673 he married Mary Beatrice d’Este of Modena who became Queen Mary when James acceded to the throne in 1685. The cypher on these standards of the Queen’s Regiment of Horse have MBER for Mary Beatrice d’Este Regina. The contemporary caption below the standards spells the Colonel’s name Sr. Iohn La.Neire, the modern spelling is Sir John Lanier.
