The heavy cavalry had discontinued the highly decorative dress sabretaches in the 1850s. No sabretaches were worn by them for the 20-30 years after the changes of 1856. But towards the end of the century they adopted undress sabretaches to wear in both undress and dress. The exact date when this sabretache was introduced is not known to me, but a Simkin painting of a KDG officer in stable dress dated 1881 shows him wearing this pattern. The monogram is not easy to decipher but is in fact KDG formed from foliated letters.
