William Fergusson was born on 19 Aug 1864. He was commissioned into the 32nd Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry as a lieutenant on 6 Feb 1894. Captain 29 June 1890. He went on the Nile Expedition 1884-5 with the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, and took part in the operations of the Advance Column under Major-General Earle. He joined the King's Dragoon Guards in 1894, promoted to major on 11 April 1900, and was appointed commanding officer and lieutenant-colonel on 14 June 1906, commanding the regiment until 14 June 1910.
He married Una Anketell-Jones. They had two daughters and a son; Violet Mary Irene born 1890, Vere Henry born 1891 and Varuna Mary born 1899. He retired with the rank of colonel and was gazetted on 9 March 1917 as receiving the Order of the Nile 3rd Class. He died on 30 June 1934.
