Steuart Bogle Smith was born on 11 July 1859. He was educated at Eton then commissioned into the 2n West York Militia on 29 Oct 1879 and joined the Worcestershire Regiment on 28 Jan 1882. He transferred into the King’s Dragoon Guards as a lieutenant on 29 Feb 1888. Captain 17 Feb 1892. Major 14 June 1898. He took over command of the regiment from Lt-Colonel Mostyn Owen on 14 June 1902, serving four years in that appointment until 1906.
When the regiment was stationed at Norwich (1893-95) Captain Bogle Smith married Julia Katharine Berners, a local girl, in December 1894, at Woolverstone Park, Ipswich. The accompanying photo of the captain in cricket gear, was taken at Norwich in 1894. He was appointed Adjutant of the Devon Yeomanry Brigade on 15 Nov 1895 until the end of 1900. He served in the Boer War and was captured by the Boers on 14 Feb 1901. He was appointed CB gazetted 31 Oct 1902. His son James Anstruther Bogle Smith also served in the KDG, joining the regiment in 1916. Colonel Steuart Bogle Smith served in the First World War in the remount Service. He died in 1922. His medals are dominated by the Austrian decoration awarded to him by Emperor Franz Joseph when Captain Bogle Smith and two other officers visited him in Vienna in 1896. It is the Eisernen Krone 2nd Classe which in English is called the Order of the Iron Crown (not Iron Cross 3rd Class as the regimental history states). The photo shows the reverse side with the date 1815, but the obverse has F in the centre. His other awards are:
