James Barry was at Rawalpindi in 1885 as Troop Sergeant Major of C Troop commanded by Captain Willett. This Troop was mounted on grey horses. Barry served in the Zulu War of 1879 and in South Africa for the Boer War of 1900. The photo shows him as Regimental Sergeant Major wearing a dress tunic with gold lace on his blue velvet collar. His rank is denoted by a crown badge on his right forearm, which is just visible. He wears a medal for the Zulu War and the Good Conduct medal.
