This was reproduced as a Christmas card in 1927, painted by Macpherson. The kettle-drummer rides a piebald horse with the old Victorian drum banners displaying at least two extra battle honours, showing here six honours on one side of the royal arms. R G Harris in his article in the MHS Bulletin, in 1963 says, ‘The Regiment gained fresh honours in the Great War and 3rd Afghan War, and final alterations were made to their banners about 1923. Four additional scrolls were needed, one added to the seven on either side of the Royal Arms and two below the WATERLOO scroll.’
The drummer now has a red helmet plume but the trumpeters still retain the white plume that distinguished musicians and trumpeters of the KDG. The drummer also wears white gauntlets which were not apparent in all the other paintings and photos. The trumpeters are mounted on grey horses and each sound special presentation silver trumpets (here shown as brass). The trumpeter on the right has a trumpet banner that was presented to the regiment, along with the silver trumpet, by King George V at the Delhi Durbar of 1911. The trumpeter on the left sounds the trumpet adorned with the golden banner presented, along with a silver trumpet, to the KDG in 1907 by Emperor Franz Josef.
