The figure nearest the camera shows the back view of a trumpeter of the KDG. This photo was taken at the changing of the guard at Hounslow barracks. The men, some of whom have medals for the Boer War, are in dismounted guard order, and the ranks exchanging guard duty have a trumpeter at each end, distinguished by their white helmet plume. Pouch-belts were discontinued in the cavalry in 1902 except for musicians and trumpeters. The white pouch that we can see on his back has a badge on the flap. On the left is a coloured drawing of the trumpeter made by Percy Sumner which shows up the blue, yellow and red cords and tassels on the trumpet.
