Gilt ear bosses of this pattern were worn on the bridles of officers’ chargers. When this pattern was introduced is not clear but the silver Victorian crown over the KDG monogram dates this as pre-1901. The design of the monogram was retained for other badges well into the 20th century. Ear bosses continued in this pattern after 1902 but with the King’s crown.
