When war broke out in 1914 and Austria sided with Germany, the regimental badge of the Austrian eagle had to be replaced. This star and garter design became the new badge, worn on caps and collars of the khaki service dress from 1915. The design was not new; it had been in use in the 19th century as there are items such as the stirrup slides that have the same badge but with a Victorian crown.
