Shabraque Badge 1763

The rank-and-file horse furniture was embroidered with regimental badges on the two hind quarters of the shabraque. This painting of 1763 shows a lion motif on a red circle with a foliated surround. This is not corroborated by any other evidence and does not bear any resemblance to the device shown in the Morier painting of 1751. In that case the badge was the crowned garter with a royal GR cypher in the centre. The 1741 Cloathing Book shows a badge of the Royal Arms.
