Patrol Jackets are not well documented in the British Army Dress Regulations for officers. The 1864 DR does not mention a patrol jacket, and the 1881 DR describes a patrol jacket for the 2nd, 5th and 6th Dragoon Guards only. This was to be worn instead of the frock coat and in effect was a shortened version of the frock coat. It had five rows of flat mohair braid loops across the chest and a stand up closed collar.
The double-breasted jacket worn by this officer, in a photo taken in 1875, appears to have only two loops across the chest which actually fasten to olivet buttons. But there are two more on the upper part of his chest that are hidden by the folded back lapels. The astrakhan fur collar and cuffs make the jacket look comfortable for cold weather. The open collar shows part of a stable jacket which was scarlet with blue velvet collar and gold lace of oak-leaf pattern.
The blue pill box forage cap has a gold lace cap-band, the lace being plain French Check pattern. The top of the cap has a gold braid edge and the central gold netted purl button has no braid figuring around it. He wears blue dress trousers with a gold lace stripe one inch and three quarters wide of the same French Check pattern as the forage cap,
