This illustration by Doug Hagger, taken from a photo, demonstrates the long cloak worn by officers. Up until 1858 the cavalry cloak was red, but in that year it was changed to blue. The cloak seen here is not so much a cloak because it appears to have sleeves. The officer wears it open at the top to show his tunic. It can be seen to have a white lining and gilt buttons. He wears the 1847 helmet and has leathered trousers for mounted duty.
