This specimen of a private’s coat shows the simplified version of the officers’ gold embroidery which are in fact patches of yellow cloth. The collar and cuffs are of blue velvet, as are the turn-backs on the coat-tails. These are edged with yellow tape or lace although this edging is not apparent in the 1840 Spooner print by Hayes. The back of the coat clearly shows the seams from shoulder to neck, and shoulder to waist where there are two buttons. Brass shoulder scales would be worn with this coat.
