The rank-and-file coats had yellow lace with a blue stripe that covered the chest, forearm and collar. This sergeant, painted by Simkin, has gold lace which was reserved for senior NCOs. Sergeant-majors were still denoted by four chevrons and a crown on the upper arm. He has brass shoulder scales which were introduced in 1824. His pale grey trousers would probably have been replaced by dark blue at this time.
