In 1746 the regiment was renumbered and titled 1st King's Dragoon Guards. Here the officer has a red coat with blue lapels to the waist to distinguish them from officers of horse who had lapels all the way down, and dragoon officers who had no lapels at all. The coat was worn with a blue waistcoat and breeches. His sash is not apparent. The cuffs are upturned slit sleeves with a buttoned 'slash'. The coat is edged with gold lace as are the buttonholes. This would be the coat worn for normal duty as opposed to the embroidered dress coat worn by Henry Herbert in the 1752 portrait. The style of the cuff matches the cuffs worn by Herbert. His tricorn hat is edged with decorative gold embroidery and his red horse furniture is well decorated with gold which suggests that he is a colonel or lieutenant-colonel. In 1767 the colour of the waistcoat and breeches was changed to buff.
