Heliopolis War Cemetery is one of the principal Commonwealth burial grounds in Egypt, created to concentrate the graves of those who died during the Second World War in the Middle East and North Africa. The site contains burials from a wide range of theatres, including the Western Desert, the Nile Delta, and the various hospitals and transit camps that operated around Cairo. Its location on the outskirts of the city reflects the strategic importance of Egypt as a medical and logistical hub throughout the war.
The cemetery’s green appearance is striking given its desert surroundings. This was achieved through an extensive irrigation system drawing water from the Nile, allowing the Imperial War Graves Commission to apply its characteristic garden‑cemetery design even in an arid climate. The lawns, shrubs and trees were planted deliberately to soften the landscape and to maintain the Commission’s principle that its cemeteries should be places of order, dignity and calm, regardless of local conditions.
Heliopolis also incorporates several memorials, including the Heliopolis (Port Tewfik) Memorial and the Heliopolis (Aden) Memorial, which record the names of thousands of Commonwealth personnel who died at sea or whose graves could not be maintained in their original locations. These memorials reflect the complex geography of the war in the region, where casualties were scattered across ports, convoys and remote garrisons.
The cemetery today remains a carefully maintained site, demonstrating the Commission’s long‑term commitment to its work in North Africa. Its irrigated lawns and formal layout stand in deliberate contrast to the surrounding environment, symbolising the permanence of commemoration in a landscape shaped by heat, sand and rapid urban expansion.
